Air Fryer Crispy Greek Calamari: a quick and healthier twist on a Greek Fish Tavern favorite! When it comes to enjoying the vibrant flavors of Greek cuisine, few dishes capture the essence of the Mediterranean quite like Crispy Greek Calamari. This beloved recipe is a staple in Greek fish taverns, delighting locals and tourists alike during both the winter and summer months. In this blog post, we’ll explore the traditional preparation of this dish and introduce a quick and healthier twist using the air fryer.
Traditionally, Greek Calamari is known for its crispy and golden crust that gives way to a fluffy and moist interior, creating a perfect harmony of textures. What sets this recipe apart is the decision to forego a heavy batter in favor of a seasoned flour coating, allowing the natural flavors of the calamari to shine through. The result is a delightful taste that is both savory and slightly sweet, a testament to the freshness of the seafood.
Choosing to Air Fry Calamari instead of deep frying
While the classic method involves deep-frying the calamari, our adaptation embraces the air fryer for a healthier approach. Whether using fresh or frozen calamari, the air fryer significantly cuts down on calories and fat while maintaining the irresistible crispiness. Beyond the health benefits, the air fryer simplifies the cooking process, eliminating the need for constant monitoring. No more oily stovetops – just place the calamari in the air fryer and let it work its magic.
With just 3 minutes of preparation and 12 minutes of cooking time, you can have a mouthwatering plate of Crispy Greek Calamari ready in less than 15 minutes. This makes it an ideal choice for busy weeknights or last-minute gatherings, allowing you to savor the flavors of Greece without a time-consuming preparation process.
To elevate your dining experience, consider serving your Air Fryer Crispy Greek Calamari with a side of double fried French fries made also in the Air Fryer and a generous dollop of Aioli sauce. The fries add a satisfying crunch to complement the calamari, while the Aioli sauce introduces a rich and garlicky flavor. The creamy texture of the Aioli enhances the overall taste, creating a harmonious balance that will transport your taste buds straight to a seaside Greek tavern.
How to make Air Fryer Crispy Greek Calamari
- For this recipe, you have the option to use either fresh or frozen calamari. If you opt for frozen calamari, ensure it is completely thawed and pat it dry using kitchen paper towels.
- To add extra flavor and intensity, incorporate spices into the flour you’ll be using, ideally those mentioned in the recipe card. For a quicker preparation and consistent outcome, instead of flouring calamari pieces one by one, place the flour along with the other ingredients in a food bag, add all the calamari pieces and mix well.Take the pieces out of the bag and make sure to remove any excess flour.
- Air fryers are capable of cooking without oil. However, there are certain foods, like calamari, that benefit even from a minimal amount. Without a light coating of oil, the flour won’t create a crispy crust; instead, it might become hard and tough. To apply oil to the calamari, you can use either a cooking spray or lightly brush them with a silicone brush.
- For a fried-like result, use either Air Fryer liners perforated with holes or a regular one in which you’ll make holes using a knife. If using silicone tray or an oil-collector without holes, the air circulation will be hindered, resulting in uneven cooking. Pay attention and don’t skip this step! If you place them on the rack, make sure to oil it well to prevent sticking and ensure the crust stays intact.
- While the calamari is getting cooked, prepare the Aioli sauce by placing all the ingredients in the blender and mixing well.
